Breaking Down Meaningful Use Requirements for Stages 1, 2, 3

"Meeting meaningful use requirements for Stages 1, 2, and 3 Meaningful Use puts healthcare providers in line to receive as much as $44,000 from the Medicare EHR Incentive Program and as much as $63,750 through the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program over the course of five to six years.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require Medicare eligible professionals attesting to Stage 2 Meaningful Use to meet the February 28, 2015 deadline. To begin with, providers must first have met Stage 1 Meaningful Use requirements. For stage 1, eligible professionals must meet a total of 18 objectives (5 menu objectives and 13 required core objectives) and eligible hospitals must meet 16 objectives (5 menu objectives and 11 required core objectives).

Some of the typical core objectives include using computerized physician order entry (CPOE) for medication orders, maintaining drug-drug and drug-allergy interaction checks, recording demographics, reporting ambulatory clinical quality measures to CMS, and protecting electronic health information through technological means."
